The department of Business and General Studies offers the following Associate Degree programmes:

 

AAS Business Studies

An Associate of Applied Science Degree in Business Studies is designed for people who are looking for the knowledge and skills to enter the business world or to matriculate to higher degrees. Prospective students may choose to specialize in Sales and Marketing or Accounting. This programme prepares students for the many positions in the public and private sectors. Students will acquire knowledge and skills in the field of Accounting, Marketing, Economics, Information Technology, Law and other areas critical to operating in today’s business environment.

Accounting Specialisation

Entry Requirements

 A minimum of five (5) CSEC (CXC) General Proficiency passes (Grades I, II or III) or their equivalent. 

Compulsory Subjects:

  1. English A
  2. Principles of Accounts

Specialised courses in this programme include:

  • Financial Accounting I and II
  • Cost and Management Accounting
  • Computerised Accounting (Quickbook)
  • Customer Service for Financial Institutions

Sales and Marketing Specialisation

Entry Requirements

A minimum of five (5) CSEC (CXC) General Proficiency passes (Grades I, II or III) or their equivalent. 

Compulsory Subject: English A

Specialised courses in this programme include:

  • Accounting for Sales and Purchases
  • Fundamentals of Marketing
  • Multimedia and Hypermedia Design and Development
  • Sales Promotion
  • Customer Service and Merchandising

 

AAS in Entrepreneurship and Small Business Management

The Associate of Applied Science Degree in Entrepreneurship and Small Business Management is designed to give students a basic understanding of entrepreneurship and an introduction to various aspects of small business management. Students entering this programme are expected to develop and produce a business plan as part of the requirements for graduation. This business plan is expected to be used as a pathway to starting up their small business enterprise. There is no industrial attachment for this programme.

Entry Requirements

A minimum of five (5) CSEC (CXC) General Proficiency passes (Grades I, II or III) or their equivalent.

Compulsory Subject: English A

A business subject, foreign language or experience in a small business would be an asset.

Specialised courses in this programme include:

  • Entrepeneurial Skills
  • Entrepreneurial Accounting
  • Commercial Transactions and Business Documents
  • Organisation and Management

 

AAS Office Administration

The Associate of Applied Science Degree in Office Administration is designed to produce marketable office professionals. Students are introduced to the principles, knowledge and skills required to work in an administrative capacity in various office environments.

Entry Requirements

A minimum of five (5) CSEC (CXC) General Proficiency passes (Grades I, II or III) or their equivalent.

Compulsory Subjects:

  1. English A
  2. Office Administration (OA)

Specialised courses in this programme include:

  • Professionalism, Protocol and Office Etiquette I and II
  • Reception Procedures and Customer Service
  • Keyboarding
  • Records Management
  • Payroll, Cash and Banking Transactions

 Please note that the AAS Office Administration is offered every other year.
